Pathogenic and Genetic Characterization of Fusarium verticillioides Strains Collected from Maize and Sorghum Kernels

چکیده
Commercial and sanitary qualities of cereals are important contribute to the determination final application destination grain and, thus, farmer profit. Although considered a minor crop in Italy, last years, cultivation area sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) has been increasing is often adjacent or subsequent most common maize (Zea mays L.) fields, with risk sharing mycotoxigenic fungi that both cereals, such as Fusarium verticillioides. The present work aims clarify if fungal physiological characteristic fumonisin production some plant growth parameters effects on germination, root shoot development tissue necrosis may be shared among F. verticillioides strains belonging sorghum, especially fields at same time. Sorghum kernels commonly less colonized contaminated by fumonisins than maize, least part, this aspect could explained higher frequency low-producing obtained from compared those maize. Moreover, although no clear pathogen specificity was found, results relating analyzed suggest host preference isolated affects seedlings greater severity well versus sorghum. Five microsatellite markers showed differences between two sets but not reliably discriminate hosts. resulting data crops, population selected during represent particular pathogenic issue for cultivation.

Genetic Variability and Geographical Distribution of Mycotoxigenic Fusarium verticillioides Strains Isolated from Maize Fields in Texas
Maize is the dominant cereal crop produced in the US. One of the main fungal pathogens of maize is Fusarium verticillioides, the causative agent of ear and stalk rots. Significantly, the fungus produces a group of mycotoxins - fumonisins - on infested kernels, which have been linked to various illnesses in humans and animals. Nonetheless, durable resistance against F. verticillioides in maize i...
متن کاملSystemic Infection of Maize, Sorghum, Rice, and Beet Seedlings with Fumonisin-Producing and Nonproducing Fusarium verticillioides Strains
Two fumonisin-nonproducing strains of Fusarium verticillioides and their fumonisin producing progenitors were tested for aggressiveness toward maize, sorghum, rice, and beetroot seedlings grown under greenhouse conditions. None of the plants showed obvious disease symptoms after root dip inoculation. Fungal biomass was determined by species-specific real-time PCR. No significant (P = 0.05) diff...
متن کاملUse of molecular markers to compare Fusarium verticillioides pathogenic strains isolated from plants and humans.
Fusarium verticillioides is a pathogen of agriculturally important crops, especially maize. It is considered one of the most important pathogens responsible for fumonisin contamination of food products, which causes severe, chronic, and acute intoxication in humans and animals. Moreover, it is recognized as a cause of localized infections in immunocompetent patients and disseminated infections ...
متن کاملGenetic and morphological characterization of a Fusarium verticillioides conidiation mutant.
Enteroblastic phialidic conidiation by the corn pathogen Fusarium verticillioides (teleomorph Gibberella moniliformis) produces abundant, mostly single-celled microconidia in distinctive long chains. Because conidia might be critical for establishing in planta associations, we characterized a spontaneous F. verticillioides conidiation mutant in which phialides were incapable of enteroblastic co...
متن کاملComparative Histological and Transcriptional Analysis of Maize Kernels Infected with Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium verticillioides
Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium verticillioides infect maize kernels and contaminate them with the mycotoxins aflatoxin, and fumonisin, respectively. Genetic resistance in maize to these fungi and to mycotoxin contamination has been difficult to achieve due to lack of identified resistance genes. The objective of this study was to identify new candidate resistance genes by characterizing their ...
